A brief Synopsis of Cooperative Project

Workers’ Cooperative Development Project

We announce with great pleasure that Ontario Trillium Foundation has approved a two year grant to Women’s Multicultural Resource and Counselling Centre of Durham (WMRCC) to develop workers’ cooperatives of six service-areas workers; teachers, artists, child & family care workers, writers/interpreters, cleaners/organizers and book keepers.  We will be conducting workshops for seven principles, and ten steps of developing cooperatives. We will also take our clients to tours of major coop sector stakeholders. We will also be delivering workshops for teaching business skills such as business planning, marketing, customer care, book keeping, networking and time management. The workers will have their sector-specific discussion groups as well. The year will end with an annual coop conference. The program will run on six-monthly cycle, which will repeat four times in two years. There will be constant support for workers through a full-time project coordinator, over the length of the project. Mentors, placement students and volunteers will be fully involved in the project from the beginning.

The project will get directions from the Executive Director, Esther Enyolu, and the Board of the WMRCC. It will be evaluated by an evaluation contractor through pr-post surveys, focus groups, data and content analysis, with six monthly and yearend reports.

In order to start a movement of workers’ cooperation in Durham Region, we need support from coop stakeholders, non-profit organizations, educational institutes, local governments, and sector specific interest groups and networks.
